š¾ Amberās EarlyāMorning Adventure on the Cloudland Trail at Roan Mountain

Hello everybody! Itās me, Amber, and WOW do I have a story for you. About a week ago, Mama woke me up super early and put me in the car before the sun was even awake. I didnāt know what we were doing ā Mama never takes me hiking that early ā but you know me⦠I was absolutely ready to go!
We drove for a while, so I knew we werenāt going to my dogtor (thank goodness). And then I saw it ā Roan Mountain! My allātime favorite place. We havenāt been on the Cloudland Trail in a long time because the area was hit hard by the hurricane I told yāall about in an earlier post. Mama didnāt want us getting in the way of recovery efforts, so we stayed away for a bit.
Let me tell you⦠it was really hard to see all the damage. Parts of the trail looked just like I remembered, but other places were totally different. Trees were down everywhere. Rocks I used to climb on were buried. The thick, cozy forest at the beginning of the trail was just⦠gone. And the little side path where Mama and I once found a survey marker? Completely covered in debris.
Mama says the trail will never look the same again, and that made both of us sad.
But you know what? It still smelled like Christmas, and that made my tail wag.
And even with all the changes, there were still plenty of rocks for me to climb, and the overlook at the top was exactly like I remembered. The smaller overlook near the beginning was still there too ā I almost missed the turn because everything looked so different, but donāt worry, I found it!
Plus, I got petted by several very friendly humans, which always makes a hike better.

On the way back, Mama took us on a little detour to the Roan Mountain Rhododendron Gardens. She says itās the biggest natural rhododendron garden in the whole wide world ā and I believe her, because it was BEAUTIFUL.
The flowers were blooming everywhere, and the paved trail made it easy for me to cruise along and sniff everything my nose could reach. Best of all, it wasnāt crowded, so Mama and I got to enjoy the quiet and just wander around together. We didnāt walk the whole garden, but we did a nice big loop before heading back to the Cloudland Trail.

When we got back to the car, I was still ready to hike more ā the Appalachian Trail goes right through there, and I LOVE hiking that part too ā but Mama said we had to head home. I wasnāt thrilled, but she scooped me into the car anyway.
Even though the trail looks different now, itās still one of my very favorite places. Maybe it always will be⦠at least until I find another one.
